Mr Vernacular*

For those of you in the know, Mr Ed Fella requires no introduction. Those of you not in the know should head down to The Narrows (of ever increasing fame, quality and breadth) until August 2nd.

For such a small space, they managed to squeeze in vast amounts of his work, with the poster wall clearly the highlight. I spent ages slowly moving from one to the next, trying to focus on the next typographic detail. Most of it was shipped over, but there's enough stuff made here while he was an artist-in-residence at Monash Uni to satisfy those needing some local highlights. His huge collection of found typography taken with polaroids was a personal treat, not just because he probably influenced my love of found type in some way or another, but for spotting details that I also thought worthy of recording. I went on opening night with the attention of posting this the next day, but the place was packed to the rafters with coolies and I couldn't get any shots without some annoying haircut getting in the way. A second trip was needed, and I ended up taking too much to cull, so I thought I'd just dump them all here.

If there are still some left, get the free poster while you're there. Each poster coming out of The Narrows seems to get better each time.

Faith and the Scientific Image
Imaging is one of the foundations of modern science. It can also be one of its most exciting elements for young scientists—nowhere is the pursuit of truth and the revelation of the invisible as well embodied as in the scientific image. There's surely no room for ambiguity with videogame evildoers: the gamer needs to know that it's okay to aim for hi-score vengeance. Conveniently, evil already has a visual language. Put another way: I have seen the face of evil, and it is a caricature of gothic construction.

If you browse through the teetering Ikea shelving at any garage sale worth its weight, tucked among the self-help books and footballer biographies, you may be lucky enough to find a pelican soft-cover, identified by its distinctive blue spine and consistently brilliant cover design. Towards a New Architect
With these intense exaggerations of form and city, they were commentaries on contemporary conditions, almost as a science fiction writer will almost inevitably write about today when depicting visions of tomorrow. So these cities of the future are still made of concrete, but also of transient slivers of silicon and amorphous clouds of wireless activity. Atoms and bits. The great promise of informatics – or whatever we end up calling it – is that the fabric of the city is once again malleable, responsive and can adapt through learning from layered patterns of behaviour.

While a bit of a love in for free markets, the book successfully manages to argue the assumption made in the subtitle. Looking at wide ranging anecdotes, he breaks up crowd wisdom into three distinct advantages – cognition, coordination and cooperation. Coupled with the four fundamentals needed for an intelligent crowd – diversity, independence, decentralisation and aggregation –
the central thesis seems more prescient as time goes on.
Robert Kinross: Unjustified Texts

perspectives on typography

Fairly heavy reading. The author deals with the ubiquitous yet hardly recognized or understood aspects of typography. More a series of readings and essays than a cohesive book; topics range from newspapers, paperbacks and road signs, while dealing with the notion of what constitutes a typeface.

Why the rich get richer, cheats get caught and your neighbor usually looks like you

Following the premise that it's the patterns, not people that dictate group behaviour. As physicists are able to anticipate patterns that emerge when looking at atoms, social trends can be viewed in the same way. While other books look at the connections between groups, this is a refreshingly scientific look at the forces and movements of human action.
As expected the author has set up a blog to further the ideas in the book.
